Coba in the heart of the Jungle

Coba is a great Archaeological site to visit with children. One of my child being younger, I always look for children or family friendly places. It´s a big site, they have over 6000 buildings, but only a small portion is open to the public. It´s in the jungle, so there is plenty of shade and the best part is that don´t have to explore all that on foot. You can rent bicycles for about 50 pesos each or take a tricycle with a local friendly Mayan guide that can fit 2 adults or one adult and 2 children (180 pesos + tip)  which is the best option because you can really save your energy for climbing the big Pyramid! When you enter the first part of the site there is a mini city with many buildings to see. The kids were happy to be able to go everywhere, climb and explore the little tunnels. You arrive at another entrance where you find the rentals.  Then the guide takes you to different parts of the site , you explore while he waits for you. You can bring water and snack but you will also find many local restaurants near by. 

Coba es un sitio arqueológico estupendo para visitar en familia. Como uno de mis hijos es mas chiquito siempre busco buenas opciones para niños o para familia. El sitio es muy grande y hay mas de 6000 edificios pero solo una pequeña parte esta abierta al público. Se encuentra en la jungla, hay mucha sombra y no tiene que caminar todo eso. Pueden rentar unas bicis por alrededor de 50 pesos o pueden ir en triciclo con un guía Maya la cual es la mejor opción para guardar su energía para subirse a las pirámides. Cuando entran, hay una mini ciudad con muchos edificios maya. Después entran donde rentan las bicis y triciclos y el guía los llevan a las diferentes partes del sitio. Los niños estuvieron muy feliz de poder explorar y descubrir unos tunelitos. Pueden traer su aqua y comida y tambien hay restaurantes cerca.

Ek Balam

Ek Balam is one of favorite archaeological site around here so far. It´s not as crowded as other sites and you can climb the pyramids to enjoy the spectacular view. It´s like a giant playground for kids climbing and running around; even one part looked like a labyrinth. My kids loved it. We had a magical moment when we got to the top of the main pyramid and it started to rain! It was a little scary but amazing to see the clouds pass by us! We just enjoyed the moment and waited for the rain to stop which was very refreshing! Perfect to visit on a cloudy day, as we practically had the place to ourselves. We had a change of clothes because we were planning on visiting the cenote but finally with the rain, didn´t go. With the new highway it was really a nice journey and we had a great day!

Ek balam es uno de nuestros sitios arqueologicos preferidos aqui en Yucatan. No hay tanta gente como los demas sitios y pueden correr y subirse a las piramides para disfrutar la vista espectacular. Es como un patio de recreo gigante donde los niños pueden subir y correr, hasta una parte se parece como un laberinto. A mis hijos les encanto. Tuvimos un momento magico cuando estuvimos en la piramide principal y empezo a llover. Estuvo poquito espantoso pero asombroso de ver los nubes pasar encima de nosotros! Nos esperamos por un momento que parara la lluvia disfrutando de este momento tan refrescante! Perfecto a visitar en un dia nublado porque tuvimos el lugar practicamente para nosotros. Como teniamos planeado de visitar el cenote cerca teniamos un cambio de ropa pero con esta lluvia no tuvimos la necesidad de refrescarnos. Con la nueva carretera el viaje fue muy agradable y nos la pasamos muy bien en este dia de exploración! 

Muyil and Sian Ka´an

Muyil near Tulum is not a big Archaeological site, but it can be nice if you combine it with a jungle trek in the Sian Ka´an Reserve. First, we started by exploring the Archaeological site following the Sacbe (which means white road in Maya) -The entrance to Muyil is 40 pesos per person (free for permanent residents and Mexicans on sundays)-  and then continued our adventure on a jungle trek with the access of the Sian Ka´an Reserve from a trail behind the main Pyramid. The cost of the Sian Ka´an reserve is 50 pesos for adults and free for children. On that trail, there is an observation tower you can climb and you will see many signs along the trail identifying different trees of the area. If you want to do a boat tour the cost is 300 pesos per person; children and adults. Some of the Mayan guides speak English.  The best part for us was the jungle trek. It was great to hear all the different birds and sounds of nature.

Muyil no es un sitio arqueologico  muy grande pero si lo combinan con una visita de la Reserva de Siaan Ka´an puede ser una buena idea. (40 pesos para Muyil; gratis los domingos para mexicanos y residentes) El costo de acceso de la Reserva de Sian Ka´an es de 50 pesos por adultos y gratis para los niños.Se puede entrar a la reserva por un camino atras de la piramide principal. En el camino hay una torre que se puede subir y hay muchos letreros que identifican los arboles de la región. Si quieren hacer un paseo en lancha es 300 pesos por persona y dura 1h30 min. Nos gusto poder caminar en la naturaleza oyendo todos sus ruidos. Fue una aventura muy linda en familia y a los niños les encantó.

Pyramid of Positive Thinking

Today our journey took us to Tulum to visit the Pyramid of Positive Thinking.  Located in the Aldea Zama, the project was started on the full moon of January 9th 2012 and is now half full.  It´s a Pyramid where people contribute in the construction by bringing positive thoughts in a PET bottle . (Good for a little writing practice at the same time) The pyramid has a height of 12 meters by 12 meters on each side. When full the pyramide will have over a million positive thoughts!

That´s a lot of good thoughts! You can take part in this project by bringing your Positive Thought every day between 9 am and 6 pm (Free entrance). It´s really nice to feel the energy and relax in this peaceful place.

Hoy fuimos a conocer la pirámide del pensamiento Positivo en Tulum. Esta ubicada en Aldea Zama y inició en la luna llena del 9 de enero 2012. Tiene una altura de 12 metros por 12 metros en cada uno de sus lados.Participa en la construcción trayendo tu pensamiento positivo en una botella PET. La pirámide puede contener hasta un million de pensamientos!!! Esta abierto de 9 am hasta las 6 pm todos los días y es de entrada libre. Es muy bonito sentir toda la energia positiva y relajarse en este lugar tan pacífico.

Deportiva Riviera Maya

If you are in the area and looking for a place to do sports, go to the Deportiva Unidad Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen you can play baseball, tennis, soccer (different fields with natural and artificial grass for futbol rapido), basketball , boxing. You will find Archery classes for children and adults and swimming classes for children at the Olympic pool. You can do bird watching (lots of beautiful birds),take a lovely walk. The kids can run free in the walking trail and enjoy the bike path. Go check it out!!! It´s located Near Avenida Universidad
