Toolok Kaa´n - Animal Sanctuary- Sanctuario de animales

The truth is that I did not expect to like it as much as I did; I´m not a big fan of snakes and after all the stories of animal abuse we hear from the 5 avenida in Playa was a little apprehensive. My friend Rebecca and her family wanted to check the place out and my son Cedric wanted to learn more about snakes and never had a chance for an up close encounter so we headed for an Educational tour at Toolok Kaa´n Wildlife Animal Sanctuary and Reproductive Center in Puerto Morelos. Cedric was so looking forward to the visit (asking every day; how many more days to the visit?) and was not disappointed. We all enjoyed the visit very much. It was also nice to have other families joining us.The place is newly open to Public and is in full expansion. It´s located on the Rutas de Los Cenotes at km2 in the jungle. Run by Lalo Reptologist and other Biologist; they are passionate about their animals and will teach you almost everything there is to know about them. ¨How can you love and respect something you don´t know anything about?¨ is their motto. With this in mind there on a mission to educate the population about reptiles. They do the tour in Spanish and English(on request) and the cost of the tour is 150 pesos for adults, 50 pesos for children and children under 3 get in for free. They use the money to expend the place and are presently building more areas for the comfort of the animals.  They have different reptiles and a corner with Farm Animals. The visit is very informative and focus on the age group and interests of the people for interaction and questions. It was very interesting to learn more about different types of turtles, snakes and Iguanas. They reproduce them and release some back to nature as well. I must say that it made me a little nervous holding the big Python snake named Kraken but it was a great experience! 

Como no soy fan de Serpientes y despues de todas las historias de abuso de animales de la quinta avenida en Playa no pense que me iba a gustar pero al contrario me encanto. Mi amiga Rebecca y su familia querian visitar y mi hijo Cedric queria aprender mas acerca de los serpientes y verlos de cerca entonces decidimos de visitar al Santuario de Vida Silvestre Toolok Kaa´n en Puerto Morelos. Cedric estaba ansioso de visitar y me preguntaba todo los dias cuando, no quedo decepcionado y a toda la familia nos gusto mucho. El lugar tiene apenas unos 4 o 5 meses abierto al publico y esta en plena expansion, se ubica en la Ruta de Los cenotes al km2. Fue iniciado por Lalo un biologo reptologo  que se dedica a la educacion ambiental con su frase famosa: Como puedes amar y respetar algo que no conoces? Con eso en la mente se dedican a la promocion promoviendo el conocimiento de las especies para su conservación. Los tours se pueden hacer en Español o Ingles y el costo es de 150 para adultos y de 50 pesos para niños. Los niños de menos de 3 años no pagan. Se usa el dinero para el mantenimiento y la expansion del lugar y si se ve que estan construyendo mas espacio para el bienestar de los animales. Se encuentran diferente reptiles y tambien hay un area para los animales de granja. La visita es muy educacional y se enfoca en la edades e intereses de de los visitantes para las interacciones y preguntas.Fue muy interesante de aprender mas acerca de los diferentes tortugas, serpientes e iguanas. Los cuidan, reproducen y liberan una parte en la naturaleza tambien. Tengo que decir que me puse un poco nerviosa cargando el grande Piton llamado Kraken pero fue una experiencia muy interesante.

 I´ve got to admit, we had such a wonderful time there learning about farm life and animals. It was a great occasion to meet other families from our homeschooling and worldschooling group. We did the visit at the end of April. The staff at the farm is super friendly and the kids just loved feeding the animals. First they showed us the food they feed the animals with and then we went around feeding the animals and touring the place. The bunnies were my favorite part since I used to have albinos rabbits growing up in Ste-Adele. It just brought back some great memories and the pleasure to make some new ones with my kids.  Tengo que admitirlo, nos la pasamos muy bien aprendiendo de la vida de Rancho y de los animales. tuvimos una esplendida ocasión de conocer a otras familias de nuestro grupo homeschooling y worldschooling. El personal del Rancho es súper amigable y a los niños les encanto dar de comer a los animales. Primero nos enseñaron la comida de los animales y despúes seguimos con la visita. Como yo tenia conejos albinos cuando era niña esa parte fue mi preferida. Me trajo unos buenos recuerdos de cúandos era niña y hizo nuevos recuerdos con mis hijos. County Fairs in Playa del Carmen- Ferias en Playa del Carmen

In Playa del Carmen there are 3 Fairs a year at the fairgrounds on avenida 115 and Constituyentes. One during Christmas vacation, one during Semanas Santas ( Easter Vacation)  and one at the end of the school year in July. They have mechanical rides, different shows, cultural events, artists every night, all free for 10 days! We like to go early when they start at 6 pm to avoid the crowds and long lines. You just go to the ticket booth for your free tickets. It´s nice to experience local culture. Don´t miss the one coming up from July 8 to July 17th 2016.  My kids favorite ride is the bumper cars.  En Playa del Carmen hay 3 ferias por año; una en las vacaciones de Navidad, Una durante los vacaciones de las semanas Santas y otra al final del año escolar. Se encuentra en la avenida Constituyentes y la 115 Hay diferentes Juegos mecánicos, productos locales, comida tradicional, cultura y baile y dura10 dias. Nos gusta ir temprano para evitar la multitud y las filas.  Para conseguir sus boletos gratis solo hay que presentarse a la taquilla. Cual es su juego preferido? 

Coba in the heart of the Jungle

Coba is a great Archaeological site to visit with children. One of my child being younger, I always look for children or family friendly places. It´s a big site, they have over 6000 buildings, but only a small portion is open to the public. It´s in the jungle, so there is plenty of shade and the best part is that don´t have to explore all that on foot. You can rent bicycles for about 50 pesos each or take a tricycle with a local friendly Mayan guide that can fit 2 adults or one adult and 2 children (180 pesos + tip)  which is the best option because you can really save your energy for climbing the big Pyramid! When you enter the first part of the site there is a mini city with many buildings to see. The kids were happy to be able to go everywhere, climb and explore the little tunnels. You arrive at another entrance where you find the rentals.  Then the guide takes you to different parts of the site , you explore while he waits for you. You can bring water and snack but you will also find many local restaurants near by. 

Coba es un sitio arqueológico estupendo para visitar en familia. Como uno de mis hijos es mas chiquito siempre busco buenas opciones para niños o para familia. El sitio es muy grande y hay mas de 6000 edificios pero solo una pequeña parte esta abierta al público. Se encuentra en la jungla, hay mucha sombra y no tiene que caminar todo eso. Pueden rentar unas bicis por alrededor de 50 pesos o pueden ir en triciclo con un guía Maya la cual es la mejor opción para guardar su energía para subirse a las pirámides. Cuando entran, hay una mini ciudad con muchos edificios maya. Después entran donde rentan las bicis y triciclos y el guía los llevan a las diferentes partes del sitio. Los niños estuvieron muy feliz de poder explorar y descubrir unos tunelitos. Pueden traer su aqua y comida y tambien hay restaurantes cerca.

Ek Balam

Ek Balam is one of favorite archaeological site around here so far. It´s not as crowded as other sites and you can climb the pyramids to enjoy the spectacular view. It´s like a giant playground for kids climbing and running around; even one part looked like a labyrinth. My kids loved it. We had a magical moment when we got to the top of the main pyramid and it started to rain! It was a little scary but amazing to see the clouds pass by us! We just enjoyed the moment and waited for the rain to stop which was very refreshing! Perfect to visit on a cloudy day, as we practically had the place to ourselves. We had a change of clothes because we were planning on visiting the cenote but finally with the rain, didn´t go. With the new highway it was really a nice journey and we had a great day!

Ek balam es uno de nuestros sitios arqueologicos preferidos aqui en Yucatan. No hay tanta gente como los demas sitios y pueden correr y subirse a las piramides para disfrutar la vista espectacular. Es como un patio de recreo gigante donde los niños pueden subir y correr, hasta una parte se parece como un laberinto. A mis hijos les encanto. Tuvimos un momento magico cuando estuvimos en la piramide principal y empezo a llover. Estuvo poquito espantoso pero asombroso de ver los nubes pasar encima de nosotros! Nos esperamos por un momento que parara la lluvia disfrutando de este momento tan refrescante! Perfecto a visitar en un dia nublado porque tuvimos el lugar practicamente para nosotros. Como teniamos planeado de visitar el cenote cerca teniamos un cambio de ropa pero con esta lluvia no tuvimos la necesidad de refrescarnos. Con la nueva carretera el viaje fue muy agradable y nos la pasamos muy bien en este dia de exploración!
